A few words about me

My passion for teaching came to light during my freshman year of college. At this time I had not yet declared a major and one of my general education classes was a literature course. English had always been one of my strengths and it was something that I was delighted to spend my time on. One afternoon my literature professor asked me if I would be interested in tutoring in the tutorial center on campus. She thought that I not only had a great command of the language but that my demeanor would be well-suited for working with struggling students. I gladly accepted and my work ensued. I was immediately taken with the students I worked with and couldn’t believe the excitement I felt after helping them achieve their goals. At the end of my freshman year I declared a major; English. I would study English Literature and go on to earn my teaching credential.

During my upper division coursework at San Francisco State University (SFSU), I volunteered in many public schools in San Francisco and along the Peninsula. I found that I had the best rapport with middle school aged children and enjoyed this setting the most. Upon graduation from SFSU, I applied and was accepted to the University of San Diego, where I earned my single subject teaching credential.

Once certified, I taught 7th and 9th grade English in a San Diego public school. I loved my students and my work but I felt I wasn’t making the change I had always dreamed of. I felt overwhelmed and distressed by some of the issues my students were faced with both academically and personally. After this experience, I took some time to decide if this was the avenue for me. I began tutoring while I thought about whether or not I would return to the public schools. I realized that tutoring was a way in which I could continue to live out my passion for education and working with children. Through tutoring, I have been able to achieve success with all my students, leaving no one behind. I have worked with government programs such as NCLB as well as private companies, practicing Lindamood-Bell and V&V strategies, in which I learned how to teach reading fluency and comprehension, narrative and expository writing, phonemic development, study and test taking skills and more. I have also taught English as a second language at universities and language schools throughout San Diego County. Through my experiences I have been able to combine my background in English and my more specialized skills in language development to help all students reach academic success.

I am now working in both San Diego schools and privately, providing my tutorial services in an effort to help students reach their full potential.
